Cover love!

I can stare at covers for hours and I'm guilty of buying books just because I couldn't resist the beautiful cover. I love to spend hours on the internet looking for the different covers of a book. It's fascinating to see how different covers of the same book look in different countries.

The Hunger Games covers. (Left to right: US, German, Russian).
I really like the German cover, especially the blood drops on the leaves. The Russian cover looks like it belongs to a romance novel, so I don't think it's a good fit for the book.

13 Reasons Why covers. (Left to right: US, UK, German, Hungarian)
I don't really have a favorite, but I'm not very fond of the German cover. The title can be translated as "Dead Girls don't lie".

Shiver covers. (Left to right: US, UK, German, French).

I've got the UK cover on my shelf. I'm not 100% sure which of the covers is my favorite. I think I prefer the German cover. The title means "After the summer" and I really love the little howing wolf on the cover.

The Replacement (left to right: US, UK, German)

The US cover is one of the best covers of 2010. It's creepy and dark in a perfect way. I love it. The UK cover stands no chance against it. I think it was a good choice of the German publisher to use a variation of the US cover.

Hex Hall covers. (Left to right. US, UK, German, Bulgarian)

My absolute favorite is the US cover. The Bulgarian cover? Umm, what happened there? It doesn't really look like a cover for a YA book, rather like the cover for a X-rated movie...

What do you think? What are your favorite covers?

I love looking at the covers used in different countries! So fun! I still think I prefer the US Hunger Games cover, but I'm with you on all of the others. And that Hex Hall Bulgarian cover! WTF??

Yay for cover love! I adore the US version of The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. The cover was 80% of the reason why I bought the first book in the first place. It was just icing on the cupcake that it turned out to be one of the best books I've ever read!

lol, I agree with you on Hex Hall. I do like the Hungarian cover of 13 Reasons Why though. I always love these posts.

With Hunger Games, I like the US cover and the German one, though with the name on the cover, I'd think it was a retelling of Peter Pan :-P (It sort of reminds me of the US cover for Uglies, too, with the girl's face hidden in leaves.

I think the Hungarian 13 Reasons Why cover is gorgeous, but it looks like it should be a mermaid book.

Shiver, I'll stick with the US version, though I think they could have used the font from the UK one.

The replacement looks like Rosemary's Baby to me, and the UK version looks like a ghost story, so... I don't like any of them.

With Hex Hall, the UK version was the first one I saw for this book. I still think it looks like an add for a TV-movie. The German one makes me think of a fairy tale set in Spain, the Bulgarian one... good grief, is that a plaid loin cloth or is she naked under an apron? The US version is perfect. It's simple and still fantasy and makes a point that what you see isn't always what you get.

This was a very cool post! Don't we all judge books by their covers, at least a little bit? Thanks for sharing!

It was so fun to see the different covers side-by-side. I do live the original Hunger Games cover and agree: Russia's looks like we're talking about a totally different kind of hunger.

I love the U.S. 13 Reasons Why but the UK one doesn't really stand out to me.

As for Shiver, she majorly lucked out since all of those are absolutely gorgeous.

I love the creepiness of the U.S. and German Replacement and I probably wouldn't have bought it were it wearing the UK jacket. That looks like one of a million vampire books.

The UK Hex Hall looks like a Miley Cyrus show on ABC Family. And Hex Hall in Bulgarian? Come on. Is there an NC-17 rating on that thing? The German is pretty but U.S. one is gorgeous.

This was fun!

I love looking at different countries' covers. It's so cool to compare them.

I agree with you that the Russian Hunger Games cover does look too romance for the actual book, but I think I would still buy it if I could.

I think the UK cover for Thirteen Reasons Whyis my favorite, though I do love the US one.

As for Hex Hall I've been in love with the US cover ever since I first saw it, but that German cover is GORGEOUS. US version is still my favorite.

LMAO..I wonder what the heck the author thinks of that last cover? It's like Girls Gone Wild, Bulgarian Style. HILARIOUS!

Thanks for sharing, Sus--awesome post!

Yes! I was so excited to see this post! I haven't read your blog before but someone retweeted this entry and I RUSHED (RUSHED, I say!) over to read it.

While I've always been a fan of the US cover for THE HUNGER GAMES (although I didn't like MOCKINGJAY'S cover), I have to say the German cover's pretty awesome. I'm generally not a fan of faces on covers, either!

I'm not really a fan of the 13 REASONS WHY covers, but the German one looks a little too gritty. I haven't read the novel, though, but it looks very Saw-like to me.

For the SHIVER cover, I'm definitely a fan of the US version the most. I think I originally picked up the novel because of the cover!

I saw THE REPLACEMENT'S cover hit a lot of top 10 covers of 2010. I haven't read the book, but what I've read in reviews, the cover matches the book's mood exactly.

Re: HEX HALL, hands down the US cover. I don't even have any words for that Bulgarian cover, except for...YIKES.

Thanks so much for this post! I love it when people examine cover art - it's still an important marketing tool when it comes to the publishing industry, and I LOVE reading about the blood sweat and tears that go into creating it. My blog covers this topic as a whole -- but I especially loved this post comparing the different international covers. Thanks again!

I agree with you on most of these. I'd say:
Hunger Games: German
13 Reasons Why: Any but the German
Shiver: The French one attracts me the most, but I'm not sure if it's a good fit for the book as I've never read it.
Replacement: US
Hex Hall: US. That Bulgarian one is WHACK! The German one looks a little off to me as well, but not off in a porno kind of way.
